National Catholic Charities Sunday
Catholic Charities USA is celebrating 100 years of serving the poor and vulnerable throughout the United States.
On this Sunday, the readings remind us that concern for the poor is at the heart of our Church teachings.
In Amos 6:1a. 4-7 he reminds us of the danger to blindness: blindness to the plight of those less fortunate, especially the blindness that can be caused by the accumulation of excess.
In the Letter of Timothy 6:11-16 seeks to hold up for us the shape of the Christian life, one that is marked by the desire of the kingdom, not excessive wealth.
In the Gospel of Luke 16:19-31, the parable reminds us that being a disciple of Jesus is not about random acts of kindness but instead it is about the ability to be in solidarity with those who are on the other side of the “gate”, the poor.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church, states that “Our Lord warns us that we shall be separated from him if we fail to meet the serious needs of the poor and the little ones who are his brethren.” (#1033).
Where is my blindness to the plight of the poor in the community, in the nation and in the world?
How can I make a positive difference in the lives of others especially those living in poverty?
